Remember the contexts for learning

Record your achievements and reflect on your learning, in and out of school.

MerIT gives you a safe place to:

write about your achievements, in and out of school
write about your progress in learning
save pieces of work you are proud of, from essays to photos
store what you have written and uploaded each year.

MerIT asks you to link each of your achievements to its setting or context. The four contexts for learning are:

curricular areas
school ethos
across the curriculum
personal achievement

Curricular Areas

Definition

What you achieve and learn in the eight curriculum areas, or any subject in these areas. The curriculum areas are:

Expressive arts
Health and wellbeing
Languages and literacy
Mathematics and numeracy
Religious and moral education
Sciences
Social studies
Technologies

Usually, each area is made up of a group of related subjects. For example, Art, Dance, Drama and Music are all subjects in Expressive Arts.

Examples:

Your achievement might be:

Writing the script for a school video about bullying (learning how to write dialogue, write stage directions for the actors and work with a group to edit and improve what I'd written).
Learning how to bake a cake (learning what ingredients I'd need, how to measure out the right amount of each ingredient using a scale, how to use baking equipment, the oven and the timer).
Being able to work out percentages.
Being able to repair a simple electrical circuit.

School Ethos

Definition

What you achieve and learn by making a contribution to the ethos and life of the school as a community.

This includes:

making a contribution to the life and work of the school
being a responsible member of the school community
helping the school to live up to its values and aims

Examples:

coming to school prepared and ready to learn
buddying new or younger pupils
being a member of the Student Council
taking part in fundraising events
taking part in paired reading
volunteering to help at a parents evening

Across the Curriculum

Definition

This is called 'interdisciplinary learning'. It’s about making connections between different areas of learning.

It includes what you achieve and learn by working on topics or projects that involve different areas of the curriculum.

This helps you to make connections between different areas of learning.

Examples:

Producing a PowerPoint presentation on Malawi might be the result of learning about the country and its people in Geography, Science and Religious and Moral Education.
And you might learn about presenting skills in English and use them in Drama to recite a poem.
Doing a project on 'Volcanoes' by learning about them in History, English, Geography and Science.

Personal Achievement

Definition

What you achieve and learn as a result of the many other opportunities you have in school for 'personal achievement'. These are usually activities that develop your self-awareness, confidence, strengths and talents.

Examples

Taking part in Outdoor Education trips or days out.
Achievement in sports or other physical activities, such as being Captain of the Netball Team.
Winning school competitions, like Poetry Slam.
Pupil of the Year, for attendance
Pupil of the month
Star Achiever Award
Taking part in an Enterprise Event
